The Role of Gender on Saudi English Language Learners’ Performance of Refusals

چکیده

Refusal is one of the most complicated challenges for hearer, as a face-threatening act, which influenced by social factors such gender. Thus, main purpose study to investigate role gender on speech acts refusal comparing performance English foreign language (EFL) learners and second (ESL) learners, males females. EFL ESL students’ data were collected using an online written Discourse Completion Task (DCT), was modified further classified based Beebe, Takahashi Uliss-Weltz’s (1990) model. A total 32 postgraduate students participated in this study: 16 Saudi Arabia (eight males, eight females) United Kingdom females). The found that has no significant performing refusals except indirect strategies adjuncts females with different interlocutors number instances used objects.
